Unfairly forgotten Jimmy Webb collaboration
Though hot on the heels of his ‘Up, Up And Away’, The 5th Dimension’s Webb-penned Magic Garden never even made the US Top 100. Perhaps its conceptual approach – documenting a stormy relationship and including the less than romantic ‘Carpet Man’ (“she walks all over you… you’re a carpet man”) – was uninviting, while its leadoff single, a sluggish version of ‘Ticket To Ride’ fortunately shifted here to the album’s end, bore little relation to such pyschedelic soul. But Webb’s lyrical honesty, and the 5th Dimension’s warmth – especially on the brief but heartbreaking ‘Prologue’ – make this a crucial constituent of both their canons.
