Assured debut from preacher’s daughter
Her groomed Avril Lavigne looks will make purists suspicious, but Dawn Kinnard deserves mainstream success. Produced in London by Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall, Ron Sexsmith, with whom she’s toured), the Pennsylvania born Harley obessive’s debut showcases a voice smoky like a sleepy Eartha Kitt. Ed Harcourt guests on ‘Clear The Way’, close friend Cerys Matthews co-writes ‘One Little Step Away’ (strangely reminiscent of Blur’s ‘Sing’), but it’s the melodically powerful Lucinda Williams-meets-Coldplay delivery of ‘No Different Now’ and ‘All In Your Head’ that stand out. ‘White Walls’’s seven minutes also provide an unexpectedly psychedelic, if glossy, finale.
