Album Review: Cannonball Adderley & The Nat Adderley Sextet - Soul Zodiac (Uncut)

4/5
A solar-powered soul jazz stew

Overshadowed by his brother (and Miles Davis collaborator) Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley, cornet player Nat was still a key component in the Cannonball run of success. So after a series of overlooked albums his reward was public endorsement, and the opportunity to release two David Axelrod-produced concept albums, Soul of The Bible and the reissued Soul Zodiac. This cratedigger’s gold is full of pyschedelic spaced-out jazz funk but its narrator, LA DJ Rick Holmes, steals the show: each track represents a horoscope sign which he defines with outrageous Barry White-style voiceovers. A double CD of Cannonball Adderley and Axelrod’s work, Walk Tall, is also available.
